The city of Guangzhou sits majestically like a jewel on the Pearl River. Guangzhou is a world class city friends mainly because anything a lao wai / foreigner could want you can find there. As an example when I went to Guangzhou I hadn't had a vacation in three years. I also had been in small out of the way Chinese towns with none of the features that Westerners like. I had not had ANY Western food in three years. In Guangzhou I ate Italian , Mexican , Thai , Indian , American , French , Turkish , Chinese , Japanese , Korean , German and a most intriguing blend of Chinese and French. I was in heaven.
Guangzhou has everything you could possibly want. There is a saying in China that Guangzhou is Hong Kong at half the price. I found that to be true.

Upon the finding of New China in 1949 as the Western countries began to recognize the new Chinese regime they needed a place for their embassies. Many of those embassies at the instruction of the Chinese government were located on Shamian Island in Guangzhou. The embassy staff and their families were allowed to have their own social clubs , churches , schools and other cultural reflections of their native lands. ALL of this has been very well preserved by the Chinese government. This explains the Colonial Era architecture of various styles and churches you will see in the slide shows and videos below. At the time of the founding of New China the Communists were still very frightened of foreign / Western influence. For that reason the Foreign Embassy staffs and their families could not ever leave Shamian Island without permission.
The picture below was taken in one of what I call Guangzhou's Disney Land style parks. The Chinese have a great sense of style and imagination when it benefits them to.The picture and slide show below will abundantly demonstrate that I think.

Shamain Island is a small Island in The Pearl River and is located in the West of the city. It is connected to the main city's Li Wan District by a causeway and is only a ten minute walk to the city proper. When I come to Guangzhou I like to stay on Shamian because there is a lot of culture here , there are good restaurants , it is close to the city and it's very quiet at night.
The sculptures you see in the photos below are all over Shamian Island. I have no idea who the sculptor is but he / she is very talented in my opinion. I'm amazed by the intricate details which make them appear so life like. I hope you enjoyed them.

The photos below are of The Good Shepherd Church on Shamian Island which was the British Church in Colonial Days and Our Lady Of Lourdes which was the French Church in Colonial Days. It might interest you to know that the Chinese government does a magnificent job of maintaining these sites as cultural treasures.

If you ever visit Guangzhou with a Lady friend or even your wife or girl friend make sure and take her on a night time Pearl River Cruise. It is very Romantic. You'll most likely get lucky that evening. The cruises leave from Shamian Island and go along The Pearl River for about five miles. The nightime views of the river bank skylines are breathtaking and very romantic.

CNBC’ correspondent C.C. Corder who just happened to be on vacation on Shamian Island ran and got her camcorder so she could bring you LIVE footage. You’ll see these videos here exclusively.
